Acidity is the result of a reservoir of stomach acid entering the esophagus and throat, causing burning sensation in the chest or bitter taste in the back of the throat. People with chronic heartburn should consult a doctor to find out what may be causing you.

Both carbonated soft drinks such as commonly used prescription sleeping pills can cause nightheartacid, possibly indicative of a severe degree of gastroesophageal reflux disease.

When acidity occurs at night, it is considered to be a more serious or advanced form of reflux disease. Heartburn during sleep can also cause a night time lyre, sleep loss and daytime sleepiness.

ACID REFLUX DISEASE.

People with frequent problems with acid reflux and heartburn may have gastroesophageal reflux disease. The disease comes from a weakened muscle valve in the esophagus, known as the lower esophageal sphincter.

The valve opens when food or fluids enter the stomach and then closes normally to prevent the accumulation of stomach acid.

STOMACH DISORDERS.

Severe underlying causes of common heartburn may include gastritis, inflammation of the stomach lining. Chronic heartburn may also result from peptic ulcer, an erosion of the lining in the digestive tract. This is caused by excessive secretion of stomach acid.

UNHEALTHY DIET.

Overeating, eating too fast, obesity and being overweight can cause frequent heartburn. People who discover they experience heartburn every day may need to change the way they eat and eat. Food should be eaten slowly, carefully and completely.

Complications caused by nocturnal heartburn.

  • Excess stomach acid in the esophagus can cause ulcers, damage to the inner layers of the esophageal wall, and narrowing (stynosis and difficulty swallowing).

  • If acid exposure continues for long periods of time, the esophagus becomes thick and damaged. A person may have difficulty swallowing and food gets stuck.

RECOMMENDATIONS TO AVOID NIGHT ACIDITY.

To avoid night acidity, the following are recommended:

AVOID FOODS THAT GENERATE HEARTBURN:

Acid reflux, or GERD, is an extremely unpleasant burning sensation in the chest and throat caused by increased stomach acids into the esophagus. There are many triggers that can worsen acid reflux, such as spicy foods, acidic fruit juices, caffeine, and fried foods.

Avoiding these foods can cause acid reflux to decrease during the day; however, reflux worsens at night in most cases. This causes difficulty sleeping and nausea for the patient. In short, avoid this type of food.

LIFT THE HEAD OF YOUR BED

Placing blocks under the bed frame or rigid pillows under the mattress head. This causes gravity to work to prevent the increase of stomach acids. When you go to bed, stomach acids don’t have to work too hard to get into the esophagus, causing an increase in discomfort.

STAY AWAY FROM NIGHT MEALS OR BIG MEALS.

Avoid eating meals two or three hours before bedtime to reduce stomach acid and allow your stomach to partially empty its contents before bedtime. Because large meals put pressure on your stomach, try eating a smaller portion of food at night to help prevent heartburn symptoms at night.

Relax when you eat feeling stressed when eating in a hurry can cause your stomach to produce more stomach acids. Relax after lunch too, but don’t lie down.

DRINK A GLASS OF WATER BEFORE BED.

Water neutralizes stomach acids and relieves irritation. Some people may swear by milk; however, milk actually increases the production of stomach acid.

FOLLOW A LOW DIET IN GRASE TO LOSE WEIGHT:

People who are overweight are at increased risk of nightly symptoms of acid reflux. Losing weight will significantly reduce acid reflux in GERD patients.

TIPS FOR ACIDITY DURING THE NIGHT

Here are my suggestions for that annoying acidity that won’t let you sleep:

SLEEP ON YOUR LEFT SIDE

This position seems to help reduce heartburn symptoms at night.

LOSE WEIGHT

Heartburn often worsens as weight loss, but losing as little as two and a half pounds can help reduce heartburn symptoms.

SLEEP WITH YOUR UPPER BODY ELEVATED

When you lie in bed, your throat and stomach are basically on the same level, making it easier for stomach acids to flow through your esophagus and cause heartburn.

WEAR LOOSE CLOTHING

Tight clothing, especially near the waist, can put pressure on the stomach and cause heartburn symptoms.

STAY STRAIGHT AFTER EATING

This reduces the risk of acid going up the esophagus. You’ll also want to avoid bending over or striving to lift heavy objects.

QUITTING SMOKING

Smoking is a double threat when it comes to heartburn. Cigarette smoke not only irritates the GI tract, but can also relax the esophageal muscles that hold stomach acid in place.
