Stretch marks often fade over time. If you don’t want to wait, there are treatments that can improve your appearance. However, no treatment can cause stretch marks to disappear completely.

There are several ways to improve the appearance of stretch marks:

  • Tretinoin cream (Retin-A, Renova) works by restoring collagen, a fibrous protein that helps give skin elasticity. It is best to use this cream in recent stretch marks that are red or pink. This cream may cause skin irritation. If you are pregnant, you should not use tretinoin cream.
  • Pulsed dye laser therapy stimulates collagen and elastin growth. It is best to use this therapy in the newest stretch marks. People with darker skin may experience skin discoloration.
  • Fractional photothermolysis is similar to pulsed dye laser therapy as it uses a laser. However, it works by targeting smaller areas of your skin, causing less skin damage.
  • Microdermabrasion involves polishing the skin with small crystals to reveal the new skin under the most elastic stretch marks. Microdermabrasion can improve the appearance of older stretch marks.
  • The excimer laser stimulates the production of skin color (melanin) so that stretch marks more closely match the surrounding skin.

There are many products and procedures that promise to eliminate stretch marks, but none have proven their effectiveness so far. Skin hydration can help relieve stretch marks.

Applying a self-tanning lotion to your stretch marks is a temporary way to minimize the color difference between your normal skin and your stretch marks.


There is no way to prevent stretch marks altogether, even if you use creams and lotions regularly. However, keeping your weight in a healthy range by eating well and exercising regularly can help prevent stretch marks caused by sudden weight gain or loss.
